Our honest position on plastic: please read this first
Most of what we make is compostable, plant-based and completely plastic-free. But a deliberate part of our range is not, and we would rather explain that than hide it.
Plastic solved real problems. It made food safe to transport, cut spoilage dramatically and made hygiene affordable at scale. The failure was never the chemistry. It was building a single-use culture around a material designed to last, without ever building the system to collect it back.
So we sell recyclable materials where they genuinely serve a purpose, label them plainly, and show the compostable alternative alongside them on every relevant page. We never describe a conventional plastic product simply as “sustainable”. Reduce, reuse and recycle today, then replace with plant-based alternatives as quickly as performance allows.

New Ranges & Formats
Yes. Our PP water cups are made for exactly that: guest rooms, bathrooms, water coolers, canteens and reception desks. They are rigid enough that a guest will not crush one, light enough that a housekeeping trolley can carry hundreds, and priced so that running out is never the problem. Available individually wrapped for in-room use or sleeve-packed in bulk for coolers and canteens.
Yes, on the PP water cups and on the double wall and ripple wall paper cups in the larger sizes. Hotels, hospitals and conference venues often require a sealed cup rather than a stacked one. In some settings, it is a procurement requirement rather than a preference. Everything else ships sleeve-wrapped in bulk, typically 100 per sleeve, which is faster to restock and cheaper per cup.
Ours is a commercial roll — 18 inches by 2,000 feet in a cutter box, in 35 gauge standard or 40 gauge heavy duty. More importantly it iscast film rather than blown film. Cast is extruded through a flat die and chilled fast, which gives noticeably better clarity and far better cling. Blown film is cheaper but hazes and peels off a stainless rim, so kitchens double-wrap and get through roughly twice the roll.
No, and we will not pretend otherwise. Cling film is PVC. It does not compost, it is not accepted in kerbside recycling, and there is currently no plant-based film that does the same job at the same price. It is the one product on our site with no environmental claim attached. Where a lidded bagasse container works instead, use that and we will tell you so.
Yes, wrapped soap bars, shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, amenity kits, bamboo cotton buds and toothbrush kits. Travel-size and case packed for housekeeping trolleys rather than retail shelves, so a floor can be restocked in one pass. Where we can, packaging is paper rather than plastic.
Yes. White sugar, brown sugar, sugar sticks and sweeteners, along with caddies. Sealed, single-serve packaging is more about hygiene than convenience. An open sugar bowl on a counter can pose a contamination risk, and environmental health inspections may flag inadequate food-handling practices.
Yes, hairnets, beard nets, bouffant caps, disposable aprons, sleeve covers, shoe covers and face masks. All latex-free and breathable enough for a full shift, case packed for operations getting through hundreds a week. It is the part of an order nobody enjoys buying and the part an inspector checks first.
Canape plates and toppers, grazing platters and serving trays, sushi boats and cones, baking moulds and glassine-lined gift boxes. Balsa is the lightest commercial hardwood, which is what lets a platter be shaped thin enough to look deliberate and still hold a loaded board. Oven safe to 240°C, freezer safe to −40°C, and never microwave.
Yes, that is the point of them. They are dishwasher safe, survive being dropped in a way glass does not, and will last years of daily use. They are bound with natural starches, so they are melamine-free and home compostable in around 90 days when finally finished. But the environmental case is that you stop buying cups, not that you compost them.
Check what holds it together. A great deal of “rice husk” tableware on the market is made from husk blended with melamine or polypropylene. This makes it a plastic product with a natural filler, and it will not compost at all. Ours is bound with natural starches, with no melamine, plasticisers or polypropylene.
Claims & Language
Because it is an unregulated marketing term with no defined timeframe or guarantee, and its use in consumer claims is restricted in some US states. Almost anything biodegrades eventually. We say compostable instead, with the applicable standard and timeframe: ASTM D8410 for moulded fibre, ASTM D6400 for plastics, and EN 13432 in Europe.
Because neither means anything. Water is a chemical. “Non-toxic” is unsubstantiable without testing. We say what is actually true instead: no coatings, dyes or additives; BPA-free and phthalate-free; and for palm leaf, nothing but a fallen sheath pressed with heat.
No product in this category is, because the FDA does not approve or certify food-contact materials. Any supplier claiming otherwise is describing something that does not exist. Our products are manufactured to comply with FDA 21 CFR food-contact requirements, and we can supply the compliance documentation.

Yes, pure plant materials, no wheat/gluten/dairy/egg/nut/soy/shellfish or animal derivatives; allergen-free facilities. Suitable for vegan, halal, kosher, gluten-free needs.
Yes, birchwood, palm leaf and bagasse can be hand-washed and reused several times before composting (not dishwasher-safe). Aluminium washes and reuses many times before recycling. CPLA is single-use.
Choosing the Right Material
Palm leaf is ideal when the table is part of the occasion. It resembles wooden dinnerware and photographs beautifully. Bagasse is best for everyday high-volume service, where strength under hot, saucy food and low cost are priorities. Sal leaf suits Indian occasions and settings where the traditional, hand-stitched look matters. All three are home-compostable and plastic-free.
Home-compostable: areca palm leaf, sal leaf, bagasse, birchwood, bamboo and balsa wood.
Industrially compostable only: PLA. It requires a commercial composting facility and will not break down in a garden compost bin.
Not compostable: PP, PET, PS, aluminium, nitrile gloves and polyethylene film. These materials may be recyclable or reusable, depending on the material and available facilities.
Rice husk tableware is designed for reuse rather than disposal and is home-compostable at the end of its useful life.
A home compost heap runs at lower temperatures and breaks materials down more slowly. Home-compostable materials can take roughly 60 to 90 days to break down under suitable conditions. Industrial composting facilities maintain higher temperatures, which PLA requires. If your site has no commercial organics collection, choose bagasse or palm leaf rather than PLA. We would rather you choose the right material than one with a better-sounding name.
Bagasse, palm leaf, sal leaf, rice husk, PLA and PP are all microwave-safe. Balsa wood and aluminium are not. Balsa wood is oven-safe up to 240°C and freezer-safe down to −40°C, but must never be used in a microwave. Aluminium must never be used in a microwave either.
Aluminium and balsa wood. Balsa is rated to 240°C, which is why bakeries bake directly in the moulds. Nothing else in the range should go in an oven.
For hot, heavy, saucy food, bagasse and mineral-filled polypropylene. For rigidity under a full plated meal, areca palm leaf, because the whole sheath is pressed rather than pulped. For heat extremes, aluminium.
Our bagasse range is made without added PFAS. Its grease resistance comes from the moulded fibre itself rather than an added fluorochemical barrier. This is one of the few claims in this category that buyers can independently verify, which is why we lead with it.
Party Packs & Sample Kits
A complete set for 25, 50, 100 or 150 guests in one box, including plates, bowls, cutlery, cups and napkins, all matched and counted with the extra quantities needed for a real event. It removes the guesswork and costs less than buying the same items separately.
Traditional for Indian weddings, pujas and festival meals, on hand-stitched sal leaf. Everyday for family gatherings and barbecues, on bagasse. Elegant for weddings and milestones, on palm leaf. Cocktail for standing receptions where nobody sits down.
In the Elegant, Traditional and Cocktail packs, Yes, the bin liner is compostable, so you fill it, tie it and put it out with the contents still inside. The Everyday pack ships a standard liner, so empty the contents into your compost or green-waste bin and dispose of the liner separately.
About a week. Orders placed on weekdays ship within 24 hours. Weekend orders ship when the next working day starts. If your deadline is sooner, tell us your date. We can often expedite delivery through a fast-track channel.
Fifteen real products, one of each, with US shipping included. These are actual products, not swatches. The $10 kit cost is credited towards your first qualifying order, and there are 26 kits to choose from, organised by material, function, business type or party pack.
Yes. The build-your-own tool lets you pick fifteen items from across the catalogue rather than taking a pre-made kit.
Delivery, Returns & Support Hours
Within 24 hours of your order from our Hayward, California and Baltimore, Maryland warehouses. Delivery then takes Weekend orders ship when the next working day starts to most US addresses.
Often, yes. Tell us the date you need it and we will expedite through a fast-track shipping channel wherever it is possible.
We operate two warehouses: Hayward, California, serving the West, and Baltimore, Maryland, serving the East. We also work with third-party fulfilment partners across the country to keep stock closer to you and shipping costs affordable. Container-scale orders ship directly from our manufacturing plants in India.
Our US team works 8am–5pm Pacific, Monday to Friday. Our India team covers 5pm–8am Pacific, plus all day Saturday. We are closed on Sundays. Outside those hours, email us and your message is answered the moment the next team is at their desk.
Unopened cases in resalable condition can be returned within 30 days. Damaged or incorrect goods are replaced or refunded in full, and we do not ask you to ship those back at your cost. Custom-printed and private-label orders cannot be returned once production has started.
Note any damage on the carrier paperwork before signing, and photograph the pallet before it is broken down. These steps are essential for a successful freight claim. Without this documentation, carriers may refuse the claim.
Sustainability, Composting & Environment
Palm leaf uses zero process water (heat-press only); bagasse CO2 is ~93% lower than paper, ~69% lower than plastic; manufacturing uses 80% less water; 60% solar-powered; products return to soil in 30–180 days vs 400–1,000 years for plastic; 10,000+ tonnes of plastic prevented yearly; zero deforestation.
Backyard composting, with no commercial facility needed. Home-compostable options include palm leaf (60–90 days), sal leaf (45 days), uncoated birchwood (90–180 days), bagasse (60–90 days) and uncoated kraft (8–12 weeks). This is a key advantage over many PLA-based alternatives, which require commercial composting facilities that are not available in many US ZIP codes.
Compostable = certified (BPI/TUV/ASTM D6400), fully decomposes in a set time with no toxic residue. Biodegradable = unregulated marketing term, no timeframe or guarantee. Always choose certified compostable. Ours is certified, not merely ‘biodegradable’.
Start a home compost bin for suitable leaf, wood and bagasse products, which can break down in approximately 30–180 days under suitable conditions. Check FindAComposter.com for local facilities, use a countertop composter if it supports the specific material, or ask local garden centres and markets about composting options. As a last resort, use general waste where no suitable composting option is available.
Yes. The world makes 380M tonnes of plastic a year; only ~9% is recycled. We collectively prevent 10,000+ tonnes annually. One restaurant switching saves thousands of plastic pieces weekly; one retailer reaches tens of thousands of homes.
Plastics, Recyclability, Reuse & Our Transition to Plant-Based
Yes, openly. A small, deliberate part of the range is conventional plastic: recyclable PP takeout containers (#5), recyclable PET cold cups (#1), and PS cutlery, plus food-grade aluminium. The majority of our range is compostable and plastic-free; the plastic items exist to serve real needs we can't yet meet compostably at the right price or performance. You can browse and buy these recyclable items directly under Shop → Containers & Boxes (filter by material), or ask us for the direct link: Shop the recyclable range → /collections/all?filter=recyclable
We cannot change the market overnight, and we will not leave customers without suitable options. For some formats, compostable alternatives cost more or do not yet deliver the same performance, and many buyers are highly price-sensitive. Rather than push them toward suppliers selling virgin plastic, we offer cleaner, recyclable or reusable alternatives now while continuing to move toward plant-based materials. Retaining those customers is how we can make a real difference in reducing plastic use.
Yes. PP containers are resin #5 and PET cups are resin #1. Both are widely accepted in curbside recycling programs, and aluminium is infinitely recyclable. Rinse off food residue before recycling and check your local program for acceptance guidelines. PS cutlery (#6) is accepted in fewer places, which is why we are transitioning toward birchwood and CPLA alternatives.
Our PP takeout containers are durable, microwave-safe and designed to be washed and reused many times. One reusable container can replace dozens of single-use items, reducing the total plastic a household or restaurant uses. Reuse is the second R for a reason.
Yes, and we will not pretend otherwise. The goal is to reduce plastic use overall. A container reused 50 times can replace roughly 50 single-use containers. Combined with recyclability and our shift toward plant-based materials, this is a meaningful step toward reducing waste, not simply a green label on business as usual.
Yes. All our PP and PET products are BPA-free, BPS-free and phthalate-free. They are selected for food-contact use and made without these substances.
Two honest reasons: performance and price. For some formats — clear cold cups, certain sturdy containers — compostable options either cost significantly more or don't yet match clarity, strength or heat tolerance. Forcing a premium that price-sensitive customers won't pay simply sends them to worse suppliers. We'd rather keep them, cut their footprint now, and switch them as compostable matures.
We hear this every day. Many customers will not switch if it costs more, regardless of the environmental benefits. Our job is to close that gap through in-house manufacturing at scale, manufacturer-direct pricing and ongoing R&D until greener alternatives become genuinely affordable. Until then, recyclable and reusable options provide a practical alternative. We aim to meet each customer's needs and help them make progress toward more sustainable choices, rather than lecture them.
Running a continuous transition roadmap. Each cycle, more SKUs move from conventional plastic to plant-based:
CPLA is made from plant-based materials, such as corn, rather than petroleum, and can be certified compostable. It looks and performs like plastic in many applications, but requires suitable commercial composting conditions to break down. This reduces reliance on fossil-based feedstocks, although compostability does not automatically guarantee zero microplastic residues.
We move quickly and closely track US state plastic bans and global regulations so we can adapt ahead of changing requirements. As regulations tighten and plant-based alternatives become more affordable, we accelerate the transition and help our B2B customers stay compliant.
Compost our plant-based range, including palm leaf, sal leaf, bagasse, birchwood, bamboo and kraft. CPLA requires commercial composting facilities. Recycle conventional items such as PP (#5), PET (#1) and aluminium where accepted. Always rinse items first and check your local recycling guidelines. Even in landfill, leaf and wood products may break down over time, unlike conventional plastics, which can persist for centuries.
Reduce: Buy only what you need and choose reusable products over disposables.
Reuse: Wash and reuse our durable items.
Recycle: Recycle PP (#5), PET (#1) and aluminium where accepted by your local program.
Compost: Compost our plant-based range using the appropriate home or commercial composting method.
Compostable is our preferred option. Recyclable and reusable products are practical alternatives as we continue expanding our plant-based range.
No. Our compostable paper plates, bowls and cups use a food-grade, water-based coating called our HydraShield™ barrier, which composts along with the paper instead of using a plastic (PE) lining. Some hot cups have a PE lining for maximum heat performance. These are recyclable rather than home-compostable, and each product is clearly labelled. See the Paper & Board hub (/materials/paper-board).
Yes, our Paper Plates & Bowls line is rigid and premium (comparable to Dixie Ultra-style), but plastic-free: it uses the aqua (HydraShield™) water-based barrier, is microwave-safe and compostable. See /materials/paper-board/paper-plates-bowls.
Microbiological Safety & Purity Testing
Yes, at ISO/IEC 17025-accredited third-party labs before release: Total Plate Count, E. coli/Coliform, Staph aureus, Salmonella, Listeria. Every batch must pass; results available to wholesale buyers.
Yes, yeast and mould count testing on every batch. Airtight shrink-sleeve packaging with silica gel keeps natural products within safe mould-inhibiting humidity for their full shelf life.
High-temperature pressing/heat treatment inactivates common viral contaminants; products are sealed immediately after manufacturing. Staff follow strict hygiene protocols.
Yes, Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, Arsenic, Chromium, Nickel, Antimony, Barium, to FDA 21 CFR and EU 1935/2004 migration limits, against the stricter of US/EU standards.
Yes, raw materials (palm, SAL, bamboo) tested for organophosphates, organochlorines, pyrethroids, herbicide and fungicide residues. Palm uses naturally fallen, untreated leaves; SAL from forests not subject to agricultural pesticides.
No added PFAS, PFOA or PFOS, no BPA or BPS, no phthalates, no PVC and no synthetic coatings across the range. Grease resistance comes from fibre density rather than added chemicals, setting our products apart from alternatives that use PFAS-based treatments. CPLA is a certified-compostable bioplastic made from plant-based materials rather than petroleum.
FDA 21 CFR (US), EU 1935/2004 (Europe), ISO 22000 principles and GMP. Facilities undergo regular third-party food-safety audits; documentation available to buyers.
Packaging, Shelf Life & Storage
Airtight multi-layer shrink-sleeve creates a sealed, moisture- and contamination-free environment; food-grade silica gel inside maintains optimal humidity across the full shelf life.
Sealed, cool and dry: birchwood/palm/SAL up to 3 years; bagasse and CPLA up to 2 years; paper cups/containers 18–24 months; aluminium indefinite. Validated by accelerated aging tests.
The shrink film is made from PE and can be recycled through participating store drop-off programs for soft plastics. The inserts are FSC-certified paper, and the silica gel is food-safe and reusable. We are transitioning to compostable packaging film across the range in 2025–2026.
Keep dry; reseal or use a lidded container; store leaf products flat in a cool dry place; avoid dishwashing areas/refrigerators where condensation forms. Opened packs keep 6–12 months.

Our Wooden, Rice Husk & Kraft Ranges
Balsa Wood is our natural wooden serving range, featuring plates, serving trays, sushi boats and cones, baking moulds, bento and collapsible boxes, and pastry and grazing boxes. The range spans six product families and 150+ SKUs. It is FSC-certified, SGS-tested, food-grade and finished without plastic.
Through a clean, mechanical process using heat, steam and pressure, with no shortcuts. FSC-certified balsa wood is responsibly sourced, debarked, heat- and steam-conditioned, then precision rotary-peeled into sheets. The sheets are formed into products, either as a single ply or using a food-grade adhesive. Where a barrier is needed, a glassine liner is added. Products are then cut, moulded and sanded, cleaned, quality-checked and packed to export standards.
Yes. Our products are made from food-grade wood, are splinter-free and have no residual odour that could affect the taste or smell of food. Any adhesive used is food-grade, and the binders are natural, with no melamine or BPA.
Bare wood can absorb oil and grease, so on items that need it we laminate a plastic-free glassine paper liner that provides the grease and moisture barrier and composts together with the wood. Boats, cones, plates and grazing boxes use bare natural wood where no barrier is needed.
Glassine is a plastic-free, uncoated paper with no wax or PE lining. It is biodegradable and compostable along with the wood. Some items come with a clear PET lid. The wooden base is compostable, while the PET lid is recyclable rather than compostable, and is clearly labelled.
Many items, especially baking moulds and food boxes, are suitable for microwave use, baking and freezing at temperatures ranging from approximately −40°C to +240°C. Always check the rating on each product’s specification sheet before use.
The wooden range is available by quotation or made to order. Share your required items and quantities, and our team will confirm availability, pricing and lead times. Email support@earthcleansestore.com or call Wholesale at (510) 458-2007.
Rice Husk Tableware (cups, bowls, plates, lunch boxes and sets) is durable and BPA-free, made from the tough husk left over when rice is milled. The husk is collected, cleaned and screened, ground to a fine powder, blended with a natural/food-grade binder, then moulded under heat and pressure, finished, inspected and packed. It has a distinctive warm, speckled natural finish.
Yes, it's BPA-free, with no melamine, and it's a sturdy material suited to everyday use, comfortable with warm food and drinks. Microwave/dishwasher guidance is shown per product.

Yes, under our Paper & Board range, Kraft Board & Boxes covers center-lock mailer boxes, food packaging boxes and board for pizza/sandwich/takeaway formats, in FSC virgin or recycled board, plus kraft SOS food bags and handle/shopping bags. Uncoated kraft is recyclable and compostable.
Our products are made to food-contact standards using food-grade materials, and supporting documentation is available to wholesale and export buyers on request. For any specific certification or test report, contact our B2B team and we'll provide what's available for that product.
Professional Care & Gloves
nitrile, poly and compostable, powder-free and latex-free, in black and blue at 4 mil and 5 mil, sizes S to XL. Four mil is the everyday food service glove for high-turnover tasks; five mil is the heavier grade for chefs, grilling and sustained prep.
This product is not part of our current range. We stock nitrile gloves only, so all the gloves we sell are latex-free, helping reduce the risk of latex protein exposure for your staff and guests.
Blue is the food industry standard because it does not occur naturally in food, so a fragment is visible if a glove ever tears. Black hides staining over a long service and reads smarter front of house. Both are the same nitrile and the same specification.
They are cleaners. Any product claiming to sanitise, disinfect or kill germs must be registered with the EPA, and we describe our range accurately as cleaning products rather than making an antimicrobial claim we do not hold registration for.
It is formulated at 70% alcohol, the concentration recommended for hand antisepsis, in line with the FDA over-the-counter monograph for alcohol-based hand sanitiser.

No. Our foodservice film is made from cast PVC. It is not compostable or kerbside recyclable and should be disposed of in general waste. We make no environmental claims about this product. We believe in being transparent rather than making claims that cannot be substantiated.
No. We make nitrile, poly and compostable gloves. The whole range is latex-free, but it would be wrong to describe it all as nitrile.
It certifies the percentage of biobased carbon in a product, and nothing else. It is not a compostability certification. Any supplier claiming that USDA certification proves a product is compostable has misinterpreted the scope of their certification.
